Grading the Final Projects of the Diploma in Visual Journalism Students
8 am to 2.30 pm, 15 Dec 2018
Venue: Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ), Ateneo de Manila University

I would like to thank Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ) at Ateneo de Manila University for inviting me to participate in PITIK 15: Forum on Photojournalism, and to be part of the external grading panel for the final projects of the students graduating from its Diploma in Visual Journalism (DVJ) programme. My trip has been made possible by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

For PITIK 15, I made a presentation titled “Ways of Documenting: Photography in Southeast Asia”, examining the works of four iconic photographers, comparing the different ways they have (or had) approached the act of documenting. Earlier the day, I conducted a class for the DVJ students, detailing the mechanics of pursuing a long term project and the possible strategies for circulating their work around the world.

On grading day, I thoroughly enjoyed the presentations of the DVJ students. The final projects they have chosen to pursue put them in challenging situations, revealing facets of our human existence that have not received sufficient spotlight. I hope, upon graduation, the DVJ students would find their voices as future storytellers.

14 Dec 2018 / The Asian Center for Journalism at Ateneo de Manila University organises PITIK, a public forum on photojournalism, each year. The forum is usually timed to coincide with the presentation of the final projects (to an external grading panel) by the students of its Diploma in Visual Journalism programme.
