Residency at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan (11 Oct to 8 Nov 2017)

I am honoured to be invited by Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan, for its research residency programme. The main purpose of my stay is to connect with Taiwanese peers interested in the different practices of photography and to share the findings from my previous book, “Photography in Southeast Asia: A Survey” (Singapore: NUS Press, 2016; second print 2017).

To this end, I travel the country to touch base with interested practitioners and to deliver a series of talks concerning my work.

6 Nov 2017 / Taipei / At night, I visited singer Panai Kusui. For over 250 days, her team has been camping out, first along Ketagalan Boulevard and then (after being evicted) at the 2/28 Peace Memorial Park, to protest the encroachment of the ancestral lands of the indigenous peoples in Taiwan. On most nights, they organise lectures on various topics related or unrelated to their concerns, provided by experts who volunteer their time. On my visit, Panai taught the very few of us present, mostly young volunteers attracted to the issue, to sing and dance to an indigenous tune. After learning the tune, Panai teaches us to dance with the tune.
