Towards the end of 2007, I was invited by the Chinese Heritage Centre (CHC) in Singapore to photograph the Chinatowns of Southeast Asia in the age of globalization. This is in line with my long-term interest in the Chinese communities of the region. While CHC is by and large an academic institution, it has been open enough to permit me to work in my own way. As I travelled through the Chinatowns of Southeast Asia, I felt like a sojourner engaged in a role-playing game. In these places, I felt both an insider and an outsider.
